Biochemtex S.p.A. is an EPC Italian company, (part of the chemical multination M&G Group), involved in the development of advanced and innovative technologies for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomasses into Biochemical and Biofuels. With a total investment exceeding 200 M€ and over 9 years dedicated to research and development within the R&D center in Italy, Biochemtex created Proesa™, a so-called “second generation” technology, which unlocks access to the fermentable sugars present in lignocellulosic biomass, for production of transportation fuels and other chemicals, thus lowering their GHG emissions, at competitive costs compared to fossil sources (i.e. oil and natural gas). The first plant in the world for the industrial production of second-generation bioethanol was launched in Crescentino, Italy, at the end of 2012. At full capacity, the plant will produce 40,000 tons per year. The plant EPC was carried out by Biochemtex, based entirely on the Proesa ® technology, also developed by Biochemtex in its R&D Centers.
- CTXI will support the activities of WP2 (Task 2.3) optimising the process to obtain second generation Bioethanol and generating a lignin-rich residue useful for the ulterior purification and valorisation.
- CTXI will support the activities of WP3 (Subtask 3.4.1) for the valorisation of intermediates in high added-value products. In particular CTXI will focus its R&D on the optimisation of second generation sugar production, usable for the synthesis of high added value materials and compounds, minimising the formation of inhibitors.
- CTXI will be involved in the LCA of the Rehap process (WP6).
